Juma Mosque- a unique construction- located on the cross of two roads, in the center of Ichan-Kala. The foundation was laid in X century, but the Mosque was built in XVIII one. The Mosque originality lies in its construction. It has not such typical elements for mosques as domes, portals, galleries and courtyard.
213 carved wooden columns support a flat ceiling of the mosque. These columns are truly pieces of art. Columns are decorated with delighted ornaments, such as geometric, epigraphic patterns and flowers. Ranges of columns create and image of praying people.
Wooden columns of Juma Mosque date from different epochs, but there are some which belong to X century.
There are two apertures, served for penetration of sunbeams, they were glazed later. Internal walls are decorated with niches in the south. The Mosque had three entrances.
Such construction was typical for extreme continental climate of Khorezm. A shapely minaret, with 33 meters high and 6, 5 meters diameter at the foundation, towers near the Mosque. 81 stairs lead to the top of minaret, where the city’s picture square panorama appears.
