In the south of the Bukhara there is a Balyand Mosque – one of the district Mosques of the city built in the beginning of XVI century.
Balyand was constructed on a high stone basis causes the name which can be translated as “High”. It is composed by two parts: winter and summer mosques. The winter mosque has a cube shape with flanked ayvan (sun-lounge). This ayvan also serves as a summer mosque. The wooden ceiling is supported by carved wooden columns. These columns were made by Bukhara woodworkers in XIX century. The most extant is an elegant interior of the winter mosque. Panels and niche of mihrab are faced with a delicate mosaic, wall ornaments are painted in kundal style. The ornament represent a flowered patterns made by suls type in sustained colors. Thanks to internal decoration Balyand is the most noticeable mosque of Bukhara.
