Bolo Hauz Mosque is located in the front of Bukhara Emirs’ palace Ark. It was built in XVIII and served as praying place of emirs and their confidants. The mosque consists of columned ayvan (pillar porch), domed chamber, minaret and hauz (water reservoir).
A splendid porch with column is a truly peace of Muslim architectural art. A wooden carved ceiling is supported by twenty wooden pillars. Both ceiling and carved columns are painted with floral patterns of many colors. These twenty columns are glassing on the water surface, so, people call this a place the “Mosque with forty columns”. Some historical sources note that Emir stepped toward the Mosque along the carpets, which were laid on the way from Ark to Mosque on Fridays at the time of general praying.
There is a minaret near the mosque which was built by a famous Bukhara’s architect Usto Shirin Muradov in the end of XIX century.
Bolo Hauz is one of Bukara’s operating mosques, where people come pray not only Fridays but other days.
Bolo Hauz is one of the most attractive mosques and notable for its tasteful and harmonious style.
