Ulugbek’s Madrassah is the only building in Bukhara, which remained in remembrance of Ulugbek, a great regent, astronomer and mathematician. Madras was built in 1417. A talented architect Ismail Isfagani participated in building works and design of Madras. The highest explosion of town building and architecture was marked in Maverannakhr cities in XIV and XV centuries.
The highlight of the epoch is a classical building of Ulugbek’s Madras. Two-stage arches are linked to a high portal of Madras from two sides. These arches are crowned with turrets- guldasta. The frontage is decorated with impressive mosaic and majolica tiles. On the door, which leads to internal square yard, there is a graved quotation sounding like “An anxiety for knowledge is a responsibility of each Muslim man and woman”. This slogan justifies a high scholar status of the ruler Ulugbek. Famous scientists of that time taught in this Madras during Ulugbek’s reign and after that. Students studied here not only theology, but geometry, astronomy, history and other disciplines.
