All roads in Bukhara lead to “Lyabi Hauz”- the most popular place among city’s guests and citizens. This complex has formed in XVII century and consists of several constructions that were built around the pool. Thus, the name “Lyabi Hauz” is translated as “pool coast”.
There is the biggest Bukhara’s madras Kukeldash raises in the north, Madras Nodir Divan Begi neighbors the complex in the east and Khonaka (shelter for pilgrims) Nodir Divan Begi stands by complex’s western side. The pool was built in 1620. Its length is 42 meters, width – 36 meters and depth is about 5 meters. Coasts are faced by the brick. Mulberry trees that were planted in XV century are growing on four sides. In the shadow of these trees, in choykhona (tea house), you can taste the most delicious Bukhara’s dishes and enjoy a cup of green tea.
Madras Devon Begi was built in XVII century and called after wazir Devon-Begi, who ordered the building of this madras. This construction is differs from other madras with a unique image of fantastic birds and animals on the entrance portal. Originally, this building was planned as caravan serai. But the ruler enjoyed it and he decided this building was fit for madras. In this case the entrance arch was rebuilt and flanked by towers, which used as religious auditoriums. Currently, there are craftsmen’s workshops in the former cells.
Khonaka Nodir Divan Begi, also built in XVII century, served as a shelter for Sufis and pilgrims arrived in Holly Bukhara from different countries. Khonaka represents a square construction with cross-shaped room under the dome with khudjras (cells) in the corners.
Kukeldash Madras was built during the Abdulla- Khan II governing (1568-1569). There are 160 monastic cells. Madras was built in Central Asian style.
