The ceramics or studio pottery takes worthy place in the applied art of Uzbekistan and the pottery making was one of the highly developed crafts.
Archeologists still find different patterns of pottery work on the territory of Uzbekistan: vases, cups, jugs and etc. Such fair finds prove that pottery products were actively used by local people. The use of ceramics is still popular among the locals and guests of the country.
Studio pottery of Uzbekistan is classified as slip glazed ceramics and non slip glazed one.
The main centers of ceramics in Uzbekistan were Fergana valley, Bukhara, Khorezm and Samarkand. Quality pottery products were also made in Tashkent and other cities.
In the course of time several basic ceramic schools have been formed and each of them singled out with original method of manufacturing, consistency of motifs and color harmony.
Ceramics made in these centers was divided into two color groups: green-brown-yellow and blue-white-green and such difference between colors was first of all determined by technical reasons. Khorezm and Fergana valley potters used to use an alkaline glaze in ceramic making and that’s why blue-white-green colours were typical for this school. Masters from Samarkand and Bukhara used lead glaze and green-brown-yellow prevailed in their work.
Potters used to produce not only household dishes, but also toys for children in shapes of dragons, birds and etc. The technique of toys made from “not slip glaze ceramics” has been popular for many years.
Professional potters of Uzbekistan still make original and graceful pottery products, regenerating and following the art of past masters.
