Wares of papier –mache have been popular on the territory of Uzbekistan since ancient times. Refined, light and durable at the same time, fancy and home items of papier-mache take a deserved place in the world of applied art in the country. Quite interesting is the compound papier- mache is made of. The compound represents a mixture of fibrous material, glue and starch filling. First, produced items are covered with thin floral and epigraphic ornament, and varnish color. The recipe of preparation of varnish and colors are steel kept and used.
The flowering of this art in Uzbekistan took place in XV century, when the papier- mache was used in architecture and decoration of mausoleums and mosques. A big assortment of such wares includes boxes, pencil boxes of different shapes, chess piece, book binding, dolls and etc.
