Carpet weaving is one of the oldest crafts in Central Asia. This art became popular since ancient time thanks to rich and original ornaments, variety of colors and to art of execution. Any oriental city associates with variegated and fairy carpets. Thus, Uzbek house can be hardly imaged without beautiful, bright carpets. They create cozy atmosphere, comfort and protects against evil. Carpets can be sort-piled and long-piled. As a rule, they are made of wool, cotton and silk fibers.
One of the oldest kinds of carpet is a felt mat. Felt is used to cover floor and surface of yurta (nomads’ tent). Common colors of the felt are white, grey and dark brown.
Modern uzbek carpets are famous for semiabstract ornaments and magic symbols. Color and ornaments of the carpet differ dependently on region. For example, Samarkand’s carpets have moderate ornament basically in black, red and blue colors. Long-piled carpets of Bukhara a notable for multicolored patterns. Carpets with red and blue stripes prevail in Fergana Valley and carpets with floral ornaments are in Khiva.
Separate attention should be paid to carpets weaved from a silk fiber. Their manufacture requires special treatment, professionalism and skills. One square meter of such wave consists of thousands kinks and work can take many months. At the same time, the fiber’s size must not exceed 2 millimeters. Colors of a silk carpet will not pale through many years.
Uzbekistan craftsmen are not only developing this art but also recreating old techniques and methods of treatment, coloring and weaving.
Oriental carpet can compare to a good wine – the older it is, the higher its value for owners.
